“We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience.” John Dewey.
Have you experienced self-reflection? I might unintentionally have.
It’s anytime you feel like sifting through your life with a magnifying glass, trying to grasp what has gone well or wrong, what needs improving. Yeah, that’s what we are talking about here.
As you may be aware, life is a long learning journey. We are all intended to grow from our experiences. However, growth isn’t an automatic process. It requires effort and intention.
This is where self-reflection comes in. It’s that tool that helps us assess our personal growth journey. We can reflect on where we are now versus where we want to be, allowing us to identify what needs improvement within ourselves. Self-reflection helps us recalibrate and focus on creating meaningful life changes to reach our goals.
This blog post will offer tips on how to self-reflect to grow and achieve your goals.
Why is self-reflection important anyway?
Self-reflection is an introspective process of looking within yourself to better understand your thoughts, actions, and emotions.
It’s an essential tool for your growth mindset and personal development, enabling you to identify your strengths and weaknesses, gain insight into your motivations and behaviours, and make positive changes in your life.
Self-reflection helps you foster self-awareness, a key component of emotional intelligence.
Therefore, regularly reflecting on your actions allows you to learn from your mistakes, celebrate your successes, and ultimately grow both personally and professionally.
Self-reflection is a crucial step if your goal is to achieve personal growth.
How to practice self-reflection for growth?
To practice self-reflection as part of your routine to grow, so you can develop, consider following the below 4 steps.

In our journey to personal growth, even if we are busy, we owe it to ourselves to find the space and time to self-reflect and introspect our lives. Now, let’s be honest. That is not an easy task. Mainly because we are constantly connected and caught up in many responsibilities.
So how to create space and time? Is it even achievable? Yes, it is! Here are some simple tips to help you do so.
Tip 1: Dedicate a peaceful and quiet spot in your home for personal reflection. It can be as simple as a comfortable chair in a quiet room, a spot in your garden, or even a dedicated room if you have the space.
Tip 2: Set aside at least 10-15 minutes each day for this activity. Early morning or late evening, before bed, can be the best times, being generally quieter and less interrupted. You may want to include it in your morning routine.
Tip 3: Disconnect from electronic devices during introspection to avoid distractions.
Tip 4: Spend quiet time alone to have a fresh perspective on life. Consider taking a calm walk in the park, hiking, or just sitting quietly to reflect.
Tip 5: Incorporate meditation or mindfulness practices into your routine to promote focus and introspection.
The idea here is to find some quiet space and time in your daily routine to focus and reflect and understand yourself better.
You want to find a calm and comfortable environment that will help you reach a relaxed state away from distractions.
2. Establish goals and intentions
The next important step when self-reflecting is remembering your goals and intentions when taking the time to introspect. Remember that it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts and emotions without specific objectives in mind. So jumping into this process with a clear mind defining what you hope to achieve through introspection will allow you to focus your energy on those areas that are most important to you.
How to determine your goals and emotions? By following the below tips.
Tip 1: Identify your values and things that matter most to you. You want to align your goals with your core values so that they are meaningful and motivating. For instance, you can identify areas for personal growth, overcome a particular challenge, adopt healthy habits or simply gain a deeper understanding of yourself. See what I mean?
Tip 2: Define a specific and measurable goal. This way, it will be more achievable. For instance, instead of “I want to be happier,” consider something more specific like: “I will meditate for 10 minutes each morning to boost my mood.”
Tip 3: Write down and document your goals and emotions to make them more tangible. You can use a journal for support.
The idea here is to set goals that are truly important to you, not just what you think you should be aiming for, because, as you know, introspection is a deeply personal process, and everyone’s goals will look different.
Whatever your goals, documenting them can guide your reflections and keep you on track, making your self-reflection much more effective and meaningful.
3. Ask yourself the right questions
Have you ever felt like you didn’t really know yourself? I have and still do sometimes. It could be that you’re just going through the motions of life without examining your inner thoughts and desires.
To have a deeper understanding of yourself, you need to ask the right questions to yourself. Here we are not discussing common questions like your favourite colour or what you enjoy doing in your free time. Instead, you want to dig deeper.
The questions format that will help you gain a better understanding of yourself are questions like: “What makes me feel fulfilled?”, “what motivates me?”, “what’s important to me?”, “what’s my life path?” and “what are my biggest fears and how can I overcome them?” See what I mean? These questions will give you a better idea of what drives you, which is what you want to discover.
Here are some tips on how to ask the right question.
Tip 1: Recognize and label your feelings and why you feel this way. Are you feeling happy, sad, angry, or something else entirely? What led to this emotion?
Tip 2: Understand your values and think about what’s most important to you. Are your actions aligned with your values?
Tip 4: Think about your best self and ask yourself: What characteristics would your best self have? Are you embodying these traits?
Tip 5: Consider your short and long-term goals. Are your daily actions and decisions moving you closer to your goals?
Tip 6: Reflect on your influences. Who or what influences your decisions and behaviour? Are these influences positive or negative?
Tip 7: Evaluate your growth. Are you better than you were yesterday? In what areas have you seen change?
Tip 8: Scrutinize your failures and successes. Ask yourself these questions: What have your learnt from your experiences? What made you successful in the past? How can you replicate those conditions to achieve future success?
Tip 9: Recognize your strengths and weaknesses honestly to navigate the process of achieving your goals with greater confidence, resilience, and self-awareness.
The idea here is to ask yourself questions that will lead to a better understanding of yourself. Regular self-reflection allows you to set yourself up on a growth path.
So, don’t be afraid to ask tough questions. The answers may surprise you and lead you to a more fulfilling life.
4. Identify areas of improvement
When taking the time to reflect, you want to identify the areas of improvement in your life. Remember the part where you recognize your strengths and weaknesses? This is where it comes in. Knowing your weaknesses will allow you to establish your areas of improvement and develop a growth mindset.
How? By following the below tips.
Tip 1: Seek constructive feedback from others. It could be from trusted friends, family, or colleagues. Outside perspectives may uncover blind spots and provide valuable insights.
Tip 2: Review your goals and dreams. Think about your long-term goals. What skills do you require to achieve them? Answering this question will help you pinpoint areas that need development and set achievable goals. It’s time to start planning and acting towards achieving them.
Tip 3: Regularly review your performance in different goals. If a recurring task always seems to be a struggle, it might be an area for improvement.
Tip 4: ALWAYS maintain a positive mindset. It’s crucial to see each identified area of improvement not as a failure but as an opportunity to grow.
The idea is that you get the opportunity to continuously learn personally and professionally once you have established the areas you need to improve. It will allow for a more meaningful and intentional approach to life as it helps you create your plan.
In essence
Self-reflection holds much power in your life and can help you achieve your goals.
Whether you are thinking about your growth in terms of career by considering your short and long-term goals, financial goals, or any personal endeavours you would like to undertake like starting a business, learning a new skill, or any other thing on your way to excellence, self-reflection is the answer.
So, allocate some time to self-reflect on your routine for a better you.
I hope these tips help you become the best version of yourself!
